Competitions Guidelines 2018-19

  1. General
    1. Members are asked to comply with these guidelines when entering images into Club competitions.
    2. Those judging images will be invited to take these guidelines into account when assessing entries.
    3. All fully paid-up or honorary members are eligible to enter club competitions during the relevant Club programme year.
    4. Members are encouraged to enter images taken within the last two Club seasons.
    5. A winning entry may not be entered for any subsequent competition other than under para.3g. All other images may be entered into other competitions whether or not the original file has been further manipulated.
  1. Entering a Competition – FOR MEMBERS ONLY
    1. PDIs.  Register your entry(ies) via the Club website, using the sRGB colour space, resolution at least 72dpi, as a jpeg file (Baseline “Standard” NOT Progressive) using maximum dimensions (irrespective of orientation or proportions) of 1920 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high by midnight on the previous Saturday.
    2. Prints. Register your entry(ies) via the Club website, using the sRGB colour space, resolution at least 72dpi, as a jpeg file (Baseline “Standard” NOT Progressive) using maximum dimensions (irrespective of orientation or proportions) of 1920 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high) by midnight on the previous Saturday. In addition
      1. Present each print in or on a mount board exactly 50cm x 40cm (smaller dimensions may not fit our display rails).
      2. Print your name and the title on the back.
      3. Bring your print(s) to the Club by 7.20pm on the evening of the competition.
  1. Trophy Competitions
    1. Lynn News Cup (Architecture). For images that explore the creative organisation of building materials and components in a land- or city-scape, dealing with mass, space, form, volume, texture, structure, light, shadow, materials, etc.
    2. Catleugh Bowl (Portrait). For the best representation of a person or persons. The image might include some or all of the following elements – likeness, personality, mood, employment, interests, environment.
    3. David Whitehouse Shield (Holiday). For any holiday photograph.
    4. British Wildlife Cup (Wildlife). For an image taken during within the previous 24 months of a zoological or botanical subject occurring naturally in Great Britain. The subject will be wild, live and free and in a natural or adopted habitat of the subject’s choice. No manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement is allowed. Only minor distractions or blemishes may be removed.
    5. Panel Competition. Each panel, submitted as a PDI, is to consist of 3 images each within a set of digital frames; each image to share a common theme.
    6. Fred Pick Cup (Humour). For an image which made the author laugh – a very personal response!
    7. Pete Mott Cup for an image presented ‘as shot’, with no subsequent manipulation.
    8. Print of the Year (POTY) and Projected Image of the Year (PIOTY). These two competitions take place at the end of the Club’s programme year. All Club competition winning images from the past 12 months are automatically eligible and, in addition to these, every member may enter up to 2 prints and 2 PDIs.
  1. Scoring
    1. Competitions will normally be judged by an external assessor, appointed by the Committee, who will be asked to award places for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended and Commended.
    2. In the absence of an external judge images will be scored by members, as arranged by the Committee.
  1. In any dispute regarding interpretation of these Competition Guidelines the decision of the Committee is final.
